Microsoft made an AI that plays Minecraft for you through natural-language text prompts

In a not-so-surprising move, it seems that Microsoft has been using advanced AI technology to create a program that can play Minecraft in response to natural-language text prompts, according to Semafor.

The system works by allowing the user to tell the character to dig or build, and the character will do just that. The tech has so far only been demoed internally to Microsoft employees.

Bings brother

According to the report, the Minecraft-playing AI was created as an experiment, and Microsoft has "no immediate plans" to include the feature in the public version of Minecraft. Given the recent problems with Microsoft's Bing AI, this decision is not entirely surprising. It is worth noting, however, that the AI powering this experiment is reportedly separate from the Bing AI.

gamin industry + AI

This development is an exciting example of AI technology's potential in the gaming industry. Allowing players to interact with games in natural language could make the gaming experience much more immersive and intuitive. Although the use of AI in gaming is not new, this application of the technology is very exciting for the $300 billion gaming industry.

Meming

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will ultimately decide to release the Minecraft-playing AI to the public, especially after all the relentless meming bing has been subject of the past weeks, Regardless, the experiment shows that Microsoft, too, sees a lot of potential in integrating artificial intelligence with gaming.
